Most companies hand you a board and point you toward the lake — we go with you. Zephyr is the only guided paddleboarding company on Mountain Island Lake and Lake Norman, so instead of figuring it out alone, you've got a professional paddleboarder on the water beside you the whole way. Real instruction, local knowledge, and company — not just gear.

A guided or social paddle is led start to finish by a professional paddleboarder — we set the pace, pick the route, help with technique, and keep the group together. Renting alone gets you the gear; going guided gets you the gear and the instruction, safety, and company. Standalone rentals are still available if you'd rather explore solo.
-
Not at all — that's the whole point of going guided. Our founder is a Registered Maine Sea Kayak Guide who's led 200+ trips and 2,500+ guests, and every guided or social paddle is paced for first-timers.

Every session includes the board, paddle, PFD, whistle, and carry bag. Our boards are wider and more stable than a typical SUP, and a PFD is required by law and provided every time.
-
Yes — kids as young as 9 can join on a board with a parent, and ages 15 and up can paddle solo on their own board. Just let us know ahead of time which kids are coming and their weight so we can make sure the right PFD is ready.

We ask for at least 24 hours' notice if your plans change — cancel or reschedule by then and you're all set.

Your safety comes first.
We actively monitor conditions in the days leading up to every paddle, and as launch time gets closer we watch the radar more than the general forecast, since it gives the clearest read on timing, severity, and how long anything will actually sit over our launch site. A little cloud cover or light drizzle almost never stops us — it tends to calm the water and can mean even better wildlife sightings, from herons in the shallows to fish breaking the surface. If thunder or lightning shows up nearby, everyone comes off the water right away and stays off for at least 30 minutes after the last one, no exceptions.
Beyond that, whether to cancel, reschedule, or send a full refund is always the guide's call, made with your safety and the best possible day on the water in mind — and we'll let you know as early as we can.

A swimsuit or quick-dry athletic wear works best, plus sunscreen, and a hat. Getting a little splashed is part of the fun for most beginners.
