That first stretch of spring weather has a way of making every indoor plan negotiable. Suddenly, a garden walk sounds lovely, your walking shoes reappear, and lunch outside becomes a great idea. Around Charlotte, you don't need a big trip to enjoy the change of season.
At Zephyr Paddlesports, our favorite spring plan involves a paddleboard and a little time on Mountain Island Lake. Our guided tours give you a way to explore with gear and a guide included. Below are six ways to enjoy spring around Charlotte, from gardens and wooded walks to a lake day with us. Pick one that fits your mood, leave a little room to linger, and let the afternoon unfold.
Wander the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens
The UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens make a lovely starting point for a low-cost day outside. Admission to the gardens and greenhouse is free. Pick an area from the garden map, check the campus parking directions, and give yourself time to stop when something catches your eye.
Choose the route with your group in mind. The McMillan Greenhouse is wheelchair accessible, while the university says the outdoor gardens are not because of uneven and sloping terrain. Restrooms and a water fountain are in the greenhouse building, so check its opening hours before relying on them.
Set aside an hour or two if you'd like an unhurried visit, or keep it shorter and see what you can. Check the university's seasonal highlights if you're hoping for a particular planting. Blooms don't follow our calendars quite as neatly as we'd like.
Make a garden day of it at Daniel Stowe Conservancy
Make Daniel Stowe Conservancy the main event for a Belmont day out. Choose the gardens, trails, or an event from the current calendar, then check the ticket option for that experience. There’s plenty of room to make it a slow wander.
Leave room to relax and choose a meal afterward if you feel like extending the day. Stowe and the university gardens are on different sides of the Charlotte area. We'd pick one and enjoy it instead of turning a relaxed outing into a race across town.
Take a shorter walk on Huntersville Downtown Greenway
Sometimes you want fresh air without making a whole day of it. Huntersville Downtown Greenway is listed as a 0.9-mile one-way route with paved and boardwalk surfaces. Walking out and back gives you about 1.8 miles, with the option to turn around sooner.
The listed trailhead is at 103 Old Statesville Road, with parking at 102 Gilead Road. Follow current signs and closures. Add a meal nearby if you want to keep catching up, or call the walk the whole plan. Both count as getting outside.
Mix a nature stop and a walk at Quest
Quest, at 6345 Sample Road in Latta Nature Preserve, pairs a free nature-center visit with a trail map for exploring outside. Check its indoor hours, then choose a walk that fits the time and energy you have. You don't need to cover the whole preserve to have a good afternoon.
Start with the nature center if your group enjoys a little indoor exploring before heading onto the trail. Choose a route together, and save nearby attractions for another visit if everyone is happy right where they are. Lancaster’s BBQ is a great food option nearby.
Follow your curiosity at Reedy Creek
Reedy Creek Nature Center and Preserve is another option for a nature-center visit and a trail walk. The center has live native animals and exhibits, and the county provides a trail map. Choose a route before setting off, especially if you're visiting with children or anyone who wants a shorter walk.
Leave room for the small discoveries. Spending ten minutes looking at one interesting thing is a perfectly good use of an afternoon. Check the day's opening information and trail conditions, and follow any closures after wet weather.

Keep an indoor idea in reserve, such as the Mint Museum, and check any reservation’s weather terms before switching plans. Spring weather gets a vote, too.
